5 Must Do Daily Practices

In the hustle and bustle of life as a mom it is imperative that we maintain consistent practices to help us stay sane throughout the day.  As painful as it feels sometimes, I start my day at 5:45 so that I have time to do these 5 practices daily.  It’s a way of filling my cup before tending to my family and my work.  They have all become integral parts of my life.

1. Walk ~ What are the benefits of walking you ask?  Let me count the ways...  Holistic health and wellness guru Dr Andrew Weil recommends walking as THE best exercise.  Not only does it do your body good but it also increases cognitive performance in the brain and reduces stress.  I choose a 30 minute morning nature walk as my daily go to exercise.

2. Yoga ~ 20 minutes of yoga each day will change your life.  I know this to be true.  After 25 years of yoga and years of experimenting with various healing modalities, I always return to the mat.  There is no better way that I know of to connect mind, body and soul.  And, yoga is a great stress reducer.

3. Meditate ~ Treat your mind as you would your body with the "mental hygiene" of meditation.  Contrary to popular belief, the practice of meditation is to bring your mind back to NOW whenever it wanders.  And, trust me, it will wander.  It is not about sitting with a blank mind for 30 minutes 3 times every day.  Start small with a 3 minute guided meditation and increase the time gradually.  Oh, did I mention that it reduces stress too?

4. Gratitude ~ After attending to my body and my mind, I begin each day by writing and connecting with 3 things I am grateful for.  Not only does gratitude feel good as I recall and focus on all the goodness in my life, but it also aligns me with the vibration of joy, happiness and abundance.  I like to call it the "back door to abundance".

5. Vision ~ Connecting with my vision daily is an absolute for me.  I read it, write it and "put it on" every day.  Living a vision driven life is THE most life giving way of living.  As I connect with my vision I BEcome the woman in it.  And so can you.

Seeing the Light

When the sky is dark and stormy, it is hard to remember that the sun always shines.  We know this to be true, but sometimes it feels as if the sun will never come out.

There are moments like that in each of our lives.  As if the dark clouds of our circumstances will never shift and we will never see the light of day.  But, just as the sun always shines behind the stormy sky, our true and shining self is always there, behind the circumstances, calmly awaiting our choice to see the light.

It may feel very real, like we are bound by the dark clouds of our circumstances.  The truth is that we bind ourselves to the dark clouds.  We have choice in every moment.  To shift our thinking and choose to see the light.  Think of the power in that.


Try This:

  • *Breathe baby breathe  Breath is a powerful function.  It is both voluntary and involuntary.  It can be used to energize or it can be used to calm.  However you use it, it will always bring you back to NOW.  To the present moment.
  • *A Grateful Heart  Seek abundance and you shall find it.  Start a gratitude journal.  Make a point every day to find 3 things you are grateful for.  You will begin to see an abundance of beauty in the world when you are looking for it.
  • *Shifting Perception  It is unrealistic to move straight from anger to joy but you can choose to make small shifts in your perception.  You can choose to think:

I AM shifting into peace.  I AM shifting into joy.  I AM shifting into seeing the light.


Slight shifts in our thinking can completely change the trajectory of our lives.  One thought at a time.

Bubble of Peace

Do you feel it?  The frenetic energy in the air.  As the holidays loom in the not so distant future.

  • For some of us it is the anticipation of all we need to do.
  • For some of us it is the anticipation of spending time with family.
  • For others it is the anticipation of spending the holidays without loved ones.

Wherever it comes from, it is sometimes difficult to discern what is ours and what we are feeling from the world around us.  And, it is during these times, that it is especially important to create sacred space for ourselves.  Creating space inside ourselves first and then extending outside into our environment.

A great daily practice is to create a protective bubble around yourself. 

Be Still. Focus on your breath.  Try this:

Bubble of Peace

  1. Place your hands at your side

  2. Imagine that with each inhale you are filling your lungs with love

  3. Imagine that with each exhale you are blowing up a bubble and filling it with peace

  4. On each exhale, raise your arms a little at a time until your bubble extends from finger tip to finger tip

  5. Imagine that you are completely surrounded and protected in your own little bubble of peace.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat as needed.

Fun. Flow. Freedom.

Peaceful Easy Feeling

Did you ever feel like you were having “one of those days”?  You wake up late…spill coffee on your white blouse…get stuck in traffic after leaving the house late…

It’s tempting to think that these things are happening TO you.  That you are powerless and destined for more of the same.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.  You are incredibly powerful.  Just look at your life.  You created it all.

Your energy at any given time determines the way you see the world and the way the world sees you.  And, if you are looking at the world from a place of victim-hood, you will see and experience more victim-hood.

Try this trio next time you begin to notice these dis-empowering TO me thoughts.

  1. Pause – this will give you a chance to respond instead of react.
  2. Breathe – find some stillness; take 3 breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth; let the exhale be longer than the inhale
  3. Mantra – choose a mantra that expresses how you would like to BE in the situation. Repeat the mantra to yourself.  Ex. Inhale ~ I AM calm, Exhale ~ I AM peaceful

I have found that changing my energy before I transition into any situation really helps.

  • In the morning before greeting my family

  • In the car before picking up my kids from school

  • On my doorstep before walking in my front door

The Color of Your Heart

I had the good fortune of witnessing a thought provoking conversation between my children this morning.  They were having a civil conversation about the color of each other’s hearts.  My daughter told my son that his heart was red and had some black spots on it because, she said, he could be mean.  My son, the oldest of the two, told my daughter the same.  That her heart had black spots on it too but it was because she was annoying.

I asked each of them what color they thought their own hearts were and they both said red and blue, like the images they had seen of the heart.  Then, I asked them what color my heart was.  My son replied that mine was pink and yellow.  He said that pink means happiness and yellow means kindness.

This melted my pink and yellow heart.

Years ago, he wouldn’t have chosen pink and yellow, because I was anything but happy.  I could ponder that…what color would my heart have been?  Instead I choose to relish in the fact that my son.  The old soul.  The one who reads me like a book.  Sees me, his mother, as happy and kind.

So grateful to the woman I was 6 years ago!  All of this work that I have done.  All of the tearing down what wasn’t working and building up what does.  The dismantling of my old life to create something new and beautiful.  It was all worth it!

Three Little Words

A few years ago I began choosing a new Word of the Year every January.  Last year was my year of YES!  I took it to heart.  I said Yes! to my health, Yes! to my family, Yes! to my dreams, Yes! to abundance, and Yes! to No!  It was an amazing year of YES! indeed.

This year I have chosen three little words.  They go together like peanut butter and jelly.  Like three peas in a pod.  They felt expansive and right and perfect for 2017.

FUN FLOW FREEDOM

As I revisit my vision and goals halfway through the year and glance up at my 2017 Vision Board, I see Fun, Flow and Freedom throughout the entire board.  I’ve begun placing red heart stickers on the images that have come to be or that are in process like trips that are planned or purchases that are being made.

I see images of FUN with family ~ jumping on our trampoline, camping and riding bikes.  I see FUN with friends ~ dancing, floating and connecting.  I see FUN with clients ~  teaching, speaking and sharing.

I see images of FLOW and FREEDOM my health and well-being, in my relationships, in my time, in my money and in my work.

What is your word of the year?  Are you living it?  Without judgement, assess the first 6 months of 2017.  What could you do more of?  What could you do less of?

We’re halfway through the year and the possibilities are endless.  What could you do to take the first step in really living your word of the year?

For This I Came

Have you ever felt as if there was more for you in this life but you just couldn't figure out what it was?  Me too.  I spent most of my adult life seeking, studying and analyzing.  Looking outside of myself for the answers.

I spent much of that time thinking...

  • after I get the ideal job I will...
  • after I get my health in order I will...
  • after I get my finances figured out I will...

And, now I understand that purpose doesn't mean that there is one grand plan for life here on Earth.  That I am here to accomplish just one thing.

I finally get it.  Life is to be lived.  NOW!  I am here to live my joy in this moment.

I discovered that purpose is more about living fully, doing what brings me life.  Rather than searching for purpose, I could have been living on purpose.  And, enjoying life along the way.

I discovered that I can use my imagination to try on different roles, different scenarios.  I listen to the still, small, ever present, ever wise voice inside of me.  And, see how they feel.  I do the expansion/contraction test.  Does this bring me life or does it feel constrictive?  If it brings me life I know that I am on the right track.

Why are you here?  What lights you up?  What would you love to be or do or have?

Do you listen to your longings and discontent?  Or do you push them down, putting on a positive face?
In this day of positive thinking we are told to only think positive thoughts, not to dwell on what is wrong in life.  And, this is true.  We do want to come from a higher level of thinking, on what is right with the world but we also need to pay attention to what is coming up for us.  If we keep pushing it down, it will always push back up.  Kind of like whack a mole.
In actuality, our longings and discontent are information.  They are messages from the deepest part of us telling us that there is much more for us in this life.
We can start with our desire and then a willingness to do things differently.
Successful people often face a turning point that comes through some crisis or difficulty.  They begin to realize that there is a part of them that is greater than what they are facing, a higher version of themselves that is seeking to emerge.
The circumstances in our lives are simply that, circumstances.  The facts are the circumstances but the Truth is that we are greater than our circumstances.
There is a part of you that has all of the answers you seek.  There is a part of you that knows exactly what to do.
Einstein says that the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the question.  You have to know where you are going to know the right questions to ask to get there.
What do you long for?  Where is your discontent?    Which one speaks the loudest?
Unleash your desire.  Make a decision from your heart.  What would you love to be or do or have?
What would it feel like to have what you desire?  Create a crystal clear picture of what you want and take the steps to get there.
The possibilities are endless...

A Magic Wand

Tracy ~ A Vision Board Story

_mg_3250-640x427 In late 2008 I created a different kind of Vision Board.  It was a very specific board created for a very specific outcome.  It was all about the birth of my 2nd child, the one I was carrying at the time.  I filled the board with pictures of all that I desired the second time around.  Sleeping babies and mothers, happy babies and mothers, healthy babies and mothers, and more importantly, positive affirmations and messages about the natural birth I so desired. I even included the name of the doctor, my doulas and the desired due date.

I created this board to heal from my first birth.  The birth of my son, my first born, shook me to the core.  Read about his Grand Entrance here.

I was a prime candidate, they said, for uterine rupture if I attempted a natural birth.  The doctors, the data, the caring friends and family, all urged me to schedule another c-section.  I took all of these facts and listened to the Truth inside of me.  Despite my fear, I did it anyway.  I listened to the still, small voice inside of me, created a Vision Board and studied it intently for months.  Morning, noon and night until the day came - January 14, 2009.

My baby girl was born naturally, drug free, in 4 hours from first contraction to birth.  It was beautiful, healing and empowering.  I owe it all to my Vision Board, my doulas and my husband who believed I could.  xo

New Year New Vision Board

dsc_0017-640x427-2 The days of creating New Year’s Resolutions are over for me.  I spent so many years creating them and then being completely disappointed in my failure to follow through with what I thought I wanted.

Now, I create a yearly Vision Board.

The Vision Board is a daily reminder of my intentions.  A visual reminder of what I truly desire in my life.    It is less about things and more about creation.  What I want to create for myself and my family.

I still include things in my board.  But, they are more of a marker rather than filling a hole as they were in the past.

They remind me:

That I am on the right track.

That I am living my life by choice.

That I am a powerful force in my life.

A true Vision Board is not a craft project.  It’s not a cut and paste activity although I’ve seen some delightful Vision Board creations.  Some true works of art.

It’s much, much more.  A Vision Board, created with inner inquiry and intention, is a powerful tool in creating what we truly desire.  It’s a decision to live life by design rather than by the default mode we may have been used to up until now.

Reflection

img_7068-640x480 At the end of every year I like to get out my calendar, my journal and a pen.  To take a close look at the events that unfolded and reflect.  Without judgement.  Without contempt.  Without remorse.  I take a good look at it all.

Years before, I would have written down all that I perceived as “bad” and burned it to get it as far away from me as possible.  And, hold on tight to the wins (if I could find any).  Now, I carefully tie it all together and celebrate.

All of the wins big and small.

All of the wonderful opportunities for growth.

The gift of choice in every moment.

I celebrate it all with a grateful heart.  Get a good glimpse of the past year in the rear view mirror of my mind.  Thanking my “younger” self for all the choices I made last year to get me where I am today.

If there is one thing I have learned since breaking my life apart almost 5 years ago, it is this.  I get to choose how I will interpret my circumstances.  I get to choose how I will respond.  I get to choose joy over any other emotion.  I get to choose to celebrate all that transpired, let it move through me and then let it go.  NOW is all that matters.

So…get out your calendar from 2016, a pen and your journal. Take a close look at the events that unfolded.  Journal it out.  Do a mind-dump.  Then, find the good in each circumstance.  Find the hidden blessings.  Rewrite last year’s story with compassion for the woman who experienced those circumstances and thank her for where she is today.
