What makes YOU come alive?

onefootup-tracynolinbeerman-lovelife.jpg

What kind of life would YOU love living?  YOU.  Not your family.  Not your friends.  Not society.  YOU!

  • What would YOU love?

  • What brings YOU life?

  • What do YOU want to be or do or create in this life?

Think about it…really…let your imagination run wild...

Most of us, when we think about what we really want, start with what we think we could do, what we should do, what our present circumstances allow, what the economy is doing, what our bank account says…

It’s time to start asking different questions, bigger questions.

Howard Thurman said Don't ask what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it it.  Because what the world needs is more people who have come alive.

Your life is an example to everyone you encounter.

  • Of possibility

  • Of hope

  • Of life

Imagine how your children would benefit from a mother who is truly alive…

  • What would YOU love?

  • What brings YOU life?

  • What do YOU want to do or be or create or experience in this life?

What would a wealthy life look like to YOU?  Wealth is not just about money.  Merriam-Webster defines wealth as abundant supply.  We can have wealth in any area of life.

  • Wealthy in health

  • Wealthy in time

  • Wealthy in love

Designing a wealthy life begins with knowing what you really want

What is it for YOU?

Try this:

  • Take a few deep breaths and center yourself

  • Ask yourself this question:  If it all worked out, what would I love to be or do or have or experience in this life?

  • Grab a pen and paper and let your imagination run wild.

  • And what else and what else and what else...

Listen

possibility-640x495
Do you listen to your longings and discontent?  Or do you push them down, putting on a positive face?
In this day of positive thinking we are told to only think positive thoughts, not to dwell on what is wrong in life.  And, this is true.  We do want to come from a higher level of thinking, on what is right with the world but we also need to pay attention to what is coming up for us.  If we keep pushing it down, it will always push back up.  Kind of like whack a mole.
In actuality, our longings and discontent are information.  They are messages from the deepest part of us telling us that there is much more for us in this life.
We can start with our desire and then a willingness to do things differently.
Successful people often face a turning point that comes through some crisis or difficulty.  They begin to realize that there is a part of them that is greater than what they are facing, a higher version of themselves that is seeking to emerge.
The circumstances in our lives are simply that, circumstances.  The facts are the circumstances but the Truth is that we are greater than our circumstances.
There is a part of you that has all of the answers you seek.  There is a part of you that knows exactly what to do.
Einstein says that the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the question.  You have to know where you are going to know the right questions to ask to get there.
What do you long for?  Where is your discontent?    Which one speaks the loudest?
Unleash your desire.  Make a decision from your heart.  What would you love to be or do or have?
What would it feel like to have what you desire?  Create a crystal clear picture of what you want and take the steps to get there.
The possibilities are endless...

A Magic Wand

What kind of life would YOU love living?  YOU!  Not your family.  Not your friends.  Not society.

YOU!

If you had a magic wand.  What would you create for yourself?  What would your life look like?

What would YOU love?

What brings YOU life?

What do YOU want to do or be or have in this life?

Think about it…really…let your imagination run wild...

Most of us, when we think about what we really want, start with what we think would fit into our lives based on:

  • our credentials
  • family expectations
  • societal expectations
  • our present circumstances
  • the economy
  • our bank account…

It’s time to start asking different questions, bigger questions.

Howard Thurman advised “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Your desires are as unique as your thumbprint.

What do YOU desire?

What would fill YOU to the brim?

What would your life look like?

  • your health and well-being
  • your relationships
  • your vocation and/or creative expression in the world
  • your time/money freedom

What would you love to be or do or have or create or experience?

And what else and what else and what else…

New Year New Vision Board

dsc_0017-640x427-2 The days of creating New Year’s Resolutions are over for me.  I spent so many years creating them and then being completely disappointed in my failure to follow through with what I thought I wanted.

Now, I create a yearly Vision Board.

The Vision Board is a daily reminder of my intentions.  A visual reminder of what I truly desire in my life.    It is less about things and more about creation.  What I want to create for myself and my family.

I still include things in my board.  But, they are more of a marker rather than filling a hole as they were in the past.

They remind me:

That I am on the right track.

That I am living my life by choice.

That I am a powerful force in my life.

A true Vision Board is not a craft project.  It’s not a cut and paste activity although I’ve seen some delightful Vision Board creations.  Some true works of art.

It’s much, much more.  A Vision Board, created with inner inquiry and intention, is a powerful tool in creating what we truly desire.  It’s a decision to live life by design rather than by the default mode we may have been used to up until now.

Good News!  I am holding a Vision Board Workshop in Raleigh, on January 21, 2017!  Join us for a full day immersion including a mini workshop, coaching, inner inquiry and sharing with 11 other powerful creators in a room full of creative energy.  Oh yeah, and a delicious boxed lunch from Catering Works!  Sign up now as there are only 12 seats and they will fill up fast.

Here’s to 2017!  The best year of your life!

Reflection

img_7068-640x480 At the end of every year I like to get out my calendar, my journal and a pen.  To take a close look at the events that unfolded and reflect.  Without judgement.  Without contempt.  Without remorse.  I take a good look at it all.

Years before, I would have written down all that I perceived as “bad” and burned it to get it as far away from me as possible.  And, hold on tight to the wins (if I could find any).  Now, I carefully tie it all together and celebrate.

All of the wins big and small.

All of the wonderful opportunities for growth.

The gift of choice in every moment.

I celebrate it all with a grateful heart.  Get a good glimpse of the past year in the rear view mirror of my mind.  Thanking my “younger” self for all the choices I made last year to get me where I am today.

If there is one thing I have learned since breaking my life apart almost 5 years ago, it is this.  I get to choose how I will interpret my circumstances.  I get to choose how I will respond.  I get to choose joy over any other emotion.  I get to choose to celebrate all that transpired, let it move through me and then let it go.  NOW is all that matters.

So…get out your calendar from 2016, a pen and your journal. Take a close look at the events that unfolded.  Journal it out.  Do a mind-dump.  Then, find the good in each circumstance.  Find the hidden blessings.  Rewrite last year’s story with compassion for the woman who experienced those circumstances and thank her for where she is today.

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.”  Wayne Dyer

Practice Makes Progress

grass-eye-level-c2a9-brett-banta-dreamstime-640x428.jpg

Remember the old saying “practice makes perfect”?  We were told this when we were kids.  When things seemed hard.  When we wanted to be the best at something we just started.  We were told that if we practice relentlessly, we would eventually master what we were facing.

I absolutely believe in practice but have come to terms with the word perfect.  I prefer to say perfectly imperfect.  The perfect part of us is our soul.  The very depth of our being.  The imperfection comes from our humanness.  There is nothing perfect about being human.  We are made to fall and stumble.  It is how we learn.

Now, I am more prone to say Practice Makes Progress.  Ahhh!  That feels better.  We don’t have to strive for perfection as there is no such thing in this human form.  We can instead strive for progress.  Progress is what we are meant to do on this Earth.  To grow.  To change.  To morph into the next version of ourselves.

When we start to go down the old road of “practice makes perfect” we can remember that we are shifting into the next version of ourselves.   By acknowledging our progress we are going with the flow of life instead of swimming upstream against the current of perfection.  Life is continually seeking to express itself through us.  It is why we strive to be more, do more, have more.  Not for perfection but for progress.

So, we can learn to celebrate our victories, no matter how trivial they may seem.  We can turn any “stumbling blocks” we may encounter into stepping stones.

  • We can celebrate our progress.
  • We can celebrate our imperfections.
  • We can celebrate our humanness.

How will you celebrate today?

Are You Ready?

c2a9-suwatchai-pluemruetai-dreamstime-com-480x312.jpg

What if you had a magic wand and all of your dreams came true…today?  Would you be ready?

  • The dream partner
  • The dream business
  • The dream home

What if they were already here?  Would you be ready to open the door and let them in?

Many of us, when we even dare to dream, forget this very important piece.  In order to get what we want in life, we have to make the space for it.  Make it welcome in our lives.

There are 3 keys to creating the life of your dreams:

  • Decide - become crystal clear on what you desire in order to make it happen.
  • Believe – have undying faith that what you desire is already yours.
  • Act – take a step, every day, in the direction of your dream.

Ask this question.  What can I do today with what I have?

If you desire a dream home, for example, you might:

  • Find a real estate agent
  • Get pre-approved for a mortgage
  • Put your present home on the market

Dreaming your dream home doesn’t get you the keys.

Take a step.  Get ready.  Make it welcome.

Why

c2a9-vladimirnikulin-dreamstime-com-hands-holding-the-sun-photo-640x410.jpg

Many of us spend a lifetime in search of our passion.  Looking outside of ourselves for the answers.

I met a man once who was in his seventies.  He confided that he had spent the past 40 years in search of “it”, his passion, his purpose in this life.  He was tired and he was depressed.  I could completely relate.  I had spent most of my own life doing the same thing.

In truth, we have everything we need inside of us.  It’s all here, just waiting for acknowledgement, acceptance.

So, start with why.  Learning your why can be as simple as listening to your longings and discontent.  They are a gift, a message, a sign from your deepest Self.  From that part of you that is connected to all that is.

There is a purpose for your life.  You were chosen to be here, on this Earth, at this time.  You are here for a reason.  That reason lies deep within your heart.

  • What are your longings and discontent?
  • What do you desire?
  • What is your why?

You have all that is needed to bring it to life.  Opportunity will present itself as you live into your why.  Make space for it now so that you are ready when it comes knocking.

100 Ways

photo2-640x479
photo2-640x479

One of the best ways I’ve found to generate joy in my life is my gratitude practice.

I do it first thing in the morning as part of my morning ritual.

In my dedicated gratitude journal, every day.

I review the day before and create a simple list of 10 things I am grateful for.

Sometimes the items on the list are as basic as being grateful for my gratitude practice.

Other times they may involve something more complex, such as the day after my accident.

On that day, I was grateful for my life, that my children were snug in their beds at the time, and so much more.

Some days it is a challenge, depending on my thought management.

But it always helps me to see things differently.

To find the good, the joy, the beauty in life.

This has not always been easy for me.

In my former life, I saw the glass half empty.

But and what if were constants in my mind chatter and my word.

Now, I look forward to my gratitude practice, the opportunity to start the day with grateful eyes.

I kick started my gratitude practice by creating a list of 100 people I am grateful for.

At first this task felt daunting, so I wrote daily for a week, reflecting each day on my life.

I started with my present life and progressed backward in time…life with kids, life with my husband before kids, adult life before my husband, early adulthood, childhood…

I was amazed to find that when I was finished I had over 125 people on my list.

I am still adding to that list.

And you are on it:)

Wishing you well

Tracy

A Grand Entrance

butterfly-perched-on-wildflower-horizontal-c2a9-scott-pehrson-dreamstime-640x4261.jpg

It is a story of transformation, of metamorphosis.  I share this story in hopes that there is a Mama out there who needs to hear it, that this story can help her in some way.  This is a very condensed version of what transpired.  I have gone through an incredible transformation since then and although I wouldn't wish the pain of it on anyone, I would most certainly wish the growth that has occurred because of it on everyone.

My son made a "grand entrance" in August of 2007.  He was born prematurely via emergency C-section (my birth plan said that I was going to have a natural, Bradley Method birth so this was quite unexpected) as a uterine infection caused my water to break.  He spent most of the first month of his life in the hospital.  Half of this time was due to his prematurity and the other half was because he turned blue in my arms and stopped breathing while at home in between.  After much poking and prodding they found that the breathing episode was caused by an odd UTI but they were never able to assure us that he wouldn’t stop breathing again.  Thus, I spent most of his first year of life awake, afraid that it would happen again or having nightmares that it did.

After my husband and family returned to work I was on my own during the day, feeling completely exhausted, overwhelmed and alone. The next challenge involved nursing a premature baby and consisted of weighing, nursing, tube feeding, bottle-feeding, weighing again and then pumping every 2 hours for the next month.  It was brutal but he became a champion nurser around his due date and also a champion screamer.  He literally woke up when he was due and cried almost non-stop for the next 7 months.  He was unable sleep longer than 2 hours at a time and required constant movement.  To say that he was colicky was an understatement.

His baby sister was born when he was 17 months old and he was in the height of what we soon learned was sensory processing disorder. Anything and everything startled him.  He was sensitive to light, sound, touch and movement.  Everything was over-stimulating and sent him into fits of crying.  Nursing baby in tow, we started seeing an OT who prescribed a “sensory diet” for him that included 6 weeks of sensory brushing every 90 minutes during waking hours.  He has been in and out of OT ever since along with periodic check ins with various specialists for other preemie conditions.

When he was around 4 or 5 I noticed that my son, who was seriously born at least 40 years old and is a highly sensitive person like me, was mirroring my least favorite negative traits and I realized that I needed to make some important changes in my life, to create a new legacy. I needed to learn how to love myself, take care of myself, live my truth and model empowerment for my children.  I then began breaking apart my life, dissecting it piece by piece, healing what needed to be healed, changing what needed to be changed.  I learned that nothing brings up your unhealed "stuff" like parenting.

I realized that a story is just a story.  It can be changed, retold, given a new twist.  The story does not define me.  The circumstances of my life have not changed but my perspective has.  The chaos of parenthood is still there, my past is still my past, what happened still happened, but now I can honestly say that I love and value myself, that I am living my truth.   It has been this "brutiful" unfolding (as Glennon Doyle Melton of Momastery might call it).  I now embrace my perfect imperfection, warts and all.

One Foot Up was born out of my experiences, what I most needed in my darkest hour.  So many little miracles happened along the way and I am grateful to be able to share what I have learned with you.  It is my wish that I may help you in your darkest hour, that my words will give you the glimmer of hope you need to take the next step.

Fun. Flow. Freedom.

Shine Brightly,

Tracy
